It’s still the number on search engine (by far) and the number one driver for organic traffic and sales. PSA! The "Scary" SEO Thing You've Probably Been Avoiding

Ahhh.... Metadata. (Wait! Don't go! Hear me out!) That 8 letter word that causes some of the most confusion, frustration and irritation among business owners when it comes to SEO. Often times, when working with clients, I will bring up working on their "back end data" and they immediately shut down. Either it's something that seems super overwhelming to them, or it's something they've been burned on in the past. Let me explain...

A lot of SEO "companies" know that some of the more technical aspects of SEO can be confusing to business owners. And why wouldn't it be? Your expertise is in running your business, NOT optimizing your website for search. Unfortunately, there are some people who take advantage of that lack of knowledge (or lack of interest in learning), and will either overcharge, or claim their doing "something" to your website that isn't really getting you any results.

So today, I'm breaking down Metadata. Now, don't shut down - it's really not that scary, I PROMISE! So before you invest a ton of money in an SEO company (or a ton of time researching how to do SEO yourself), let's dive into some of the terminology when it comes to "back end SEO" and whether or not you should be wasting your time, money and energy on it.

Meta Titles

Meta Titles, or Title Tags, are the titles you give each of your pages. These title tags are displayed in search as the clickable title in search results, as well as the title that appears up on the tab in a web browser.

Meta Titles are really important not just for Google to get an idea of what your page is about it, but are used for social sharing (they're what populates automatically when you paste a link in Facebook), and should encourage clicks to your site. Updating your Meta Titles on every one of your website's pages should be a top priority.

Meta Descriptions

Meta Descriptions, like Meta Titles, are full sentence descriptions placed on the backend of each page in your website, that utilize keywords to appeal to search engines, and draw in potential website traffic. Like their Title counterpart, these should also be updated to include important keywords on each and every page.

Meta Keywords

Ok, here's a good sign if the SEO company you're looking to hire is legit. Meta Keywords used to be Google's jam, and it was the main focus of almost every SEO company's strategy for a long time. However, Google realized that people were just stuffing random keywords into the section, and that it wasn't helping them serve relevant results to people. So a few years ago they completely eliminated any authority behind meta keywords. If you find an SEO company that is still touting them as part of their strategy, you may want to think twice.

Alt Tags

Alt Tags, or Alternative Text Tags, are descriptions put on the back of images, that describe what the image is, or the function of it. It's used mostly by screen readers (for those that are blind or visually impaired), but also hold weight with Google, who use them to tell what the image and it's surrounding text is about. Adding Alt Tags to your images are a great way to add even MORE keywords to your site, plus ensures your site is accessible to those who are visually impaired.

H1-H3 Tags

A lot of people believe that Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3 (and so on), tags are strictly used for design purposes, as they often change the style of text. Not true! They are actually great ways to layout your page, and quickly and easily showcase your page content to Google. Make sure you have descriptive H1 titles, and try to include H2 tags throughout the page to break up walls of text, and give people (and Google) an idea of what each section is about.

You’ve heard content is important. 

But what’s next? What’s your next piece of content going to be about? 

Many small businesses choose topics related to services or products. Alternatively, some choose topics based on current events or the interests of staff. 

All of those are fine, yet these businesses wonder why that content is not driving traffic or kindling interest after initial publish.

Below, you’ll learn three ways to create content that:

  • Your target market cares about
  • Drives traffic to your site

Answer Questions

Many businesses seek SEO services to rank better for competitive terms related to services and products. However, query-related content is a great way to drive traffic and the interest of people who are in the sales funnel. 

So rather than attempt to rank for a product or service term, you want a piece of content to rank well in addressing a customer’s question or concern.

Let’s use a sneaker supplier as an example. It’s very likely generic words like ‘sneakers’ or ‘womens sneakers’ will be too competitive. Similarly, any brand name such as ‘Nike’ or ‘Vans’ will be super competitive. 

What’s a small businessperson to do? Answer questions that customers have related to the product or service.

  1. Start toying with Google’s autosuggest function. 

Place words how to, when, and what before a term.

There’s no limit to what you can find. Below, I’m going through the alphabet, putting ‘b’ next to ‘how to’:

2. AnswerthePublic is a cool content tool that gives a grand idea of the kind of information people want to know around any topic. 

Let’s use the topic of car insurance. We put ‘car insurance’ in the tool, choose US for country origin, and we’re provided with 157 questions.

At this point, you may wonder which topics to choose. To further target content, consider the search volume and competition level.

Copy and paste queries into Google’s Keyword Planner to get monthly search volume and a better idea of how difficult it will be to rank for the term.

Get Peripheral

3. Let’s use Google Analytics to learn more about our site visitors’ interests.

In Analytics, go to Audience → Interests → Affinity Categories

Basically, Google segments site visitors by their overall search behavior. It’s a nice way to generate peripheral topic ideas. 

So let’s say we have a clothing business and identify Home Decor Enthusiast as an affinity category. Our customers shop for clothes, but according to Google data, they also visit home interior sites, buy home goods, etc.

You can get creative in combining your service or product with identified affinity categories. Or, you could use a content ideation tool like Hubspot’s.

What is SEO?

Website developers, digital marketers and ad agencies throw around the term SEO in everyday conversation. Ever since Google began dominating the search market, businesses big and small have been searching for ways to get found. We now have companies built specifically around finding ways to utilize the various algorithms and get their clients ranked #1 in search. But for a small business, what does SEO actually mean, and what do you really need to know about it?

Put very plainly, search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of getting your website to rank for desired search terms without paying for it.  In this age of technology, most people are researching their choices online before making any decision. They want to make sure they know a business inside and out, and that it will fit their needs before they make a purchasing decision. So how can you, as a small business, begin to show up if someone searches for your product or service? Below are a few, very basic tools that are awesome places to start.

1. Make sure your website is up-to-date and relevant. Do an internal audit of your website. Do you have enough content on your site? Is it full of keywords? One of the first places to start is on the front end of your site. Make sure it’s full of content, photos and videos (if you have any) that describes you and your business and makes it easy for both the consumer (and Google) to figure out what you actually do.

2. Add relevant links. Google wants to know that you’re a real website, and one of the ways it can do that is by seeing that you are associated with other real websites. Creatn content such as adding a news page linking out to websites that provide useful information related to your business or a page that shows off a list of your clients and drives traffic to their site. Ask your clients to do the same if possible. Finally, make sure you put your website on legitimate social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter to add some more links back to your page.

3. Speaking of social media, get on it! If you don’t have a presence on multiple social media sites, you are doing yourself a disservice. Sites like Facebook and Twitter already carry huge weight in the SEO market and provide another place for people to find you and your brand. Not only that, but they provide a place to post relevant, shareable content to help spread the word and keep people updated about your product or service.

4. Do the backend work. Filling out data correctly on the backend of your website (or data not seen by you and I just by looking at your site) can make a huge difference in your ranking. While this is absolutely something you can do on your own, a lot of business owners prefer to have someone with more experience do it for them. If that sounds like you, we've got some things you should be looking out for when interviewing prospective candidates:

  • Meta titles and descriptions are the most important. A lot of companies still focus on “meta keywords” which aren’t relevant anymore to Google. Find a company that knows that and understands that a majority of their focus should be on creating rich titles and descriptions (in full sentences!) and that every page should have different content. A huge “no-no” is putting the same title, description and keywords on every page.
  • Make sure they will index you in webmaster tools, and know how to do it. Webmaster tools is the best way to tell Google that you are a relevant site with rich content. Submitting your URL to index and your site map are things that any SEO expert should know.
  • Ask what else they can do for you. Outside of adding your meta data, ask them what other outlets they can get you on and other tools that make make sense. Does blogging make sense for you? Do you have a lot of videos? Maybe a YouTube page would work well. Ask them to help you out with suggestions beyond that basics. 

5. Be patient. These things take time! You’re not going to start ranking right away and you’re not going to immediately generate leads. Know that this is a longterm strategy for you. Be patient and it will pay off.
